Band Earns Superior Rating at UIL

The Burleson High School “Spirit of the Elks” Marching Band earned a 1st division (superior) rating from all three adjudicators for its outstanding performance of “Jericho” during the UIL Region 30 5A-6A Marching Band Contest held at BISD Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 15th.

The BHS production was based on and inspired by music from the spiritual, “Joshua Fit the Battle at Jericho”, “The Burning Bush” by Hans Zimmer from the soundtrack of Disney’s feature film, “The Prince of Egypt,” “Arabesque” by Samuel Hazo, and “Doxology” from the Genevan Psalter. ¬†Musical arrangements were by William Pitts of Atlanta, Georgia,.

The visual story line was based on the Biblical tale of Joshua and the children of Israel as they approached their first military challenge during the process of possessing the land of Canaan. During the finale, when the trumpets sounded a loud call, all shouted in unison, and the walls of Jericho fell down flat.

The show featured solos by Allie Price, flute, Hayden Simms, trumpet, Andrew Bracken, alto saxophone, and Emory Harris & Chelsea Austin, both of the color guard. Nineteen 5A and 6A marching bands performed their 2016 shows during the annual event.
